If someone had told me months before this day that as Morgan and Cutter’s Switzerland elopement photographer, the day would involve rain, temperatures in the 40s, soaked shoes, and last-minute location changes… I probably would’ve been a little nervous.

Instead, it became one of the most meaningful wedding days I’ve ever been a part of.

Morgan and Cutter first found me at the West Texas Social Wedding Expo back in February. We clicked and spent time talking about their vision for an intimate destination elopement in Switzerland, and from the very beginning, I knew these two weren’t chasing perfection. They wanted an experience they’d remember for the rest of their lives.

A few months later, my husband and I boarded a plane to meet them in the Swiss Alps – not just to photograph their wedding day, but to witness it, and make sure they were taken care of!

Why They Chose a Switzerland Elopement

There is something incredibly special about choosing an elopement over a traditional wedding. Just two people making promises to one another in one of the most beautiful places in the world. For this couple, they knew it was right for them – plus they are both fans of “The Amazing Race”, and that sparked an interest in new expereinces overseas.

Morgan and Cutter chose the breathtaking villages of Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen (with a little help from me) for exactly that reason. Towering mountains, waterfalls pouring down the cliffs, tiny alpine villages, and peaceful valleys made the perfect backdrop for a wedding that was completely their own. In fact, it was just the four of us – The bride and groom, my huband, and me – seeking out the perfect moments to encapsulate their day.

One of my favorite parts of destination weddings is that they rarely begin on the wedding day. The evening before their elopement, the four of us met for dinner at a little cozy restaurant we had scouted in Lauterbrunnen. We laughed over travel stories, talked about what they were most excited for, and watched them experience Swiss fondue for the very first time. By the day of the wedding, it truly felt like we were there with friends.

Planning for the Unexpected

The day before the wedding, my husband and I spent hours scouting locations around Lauterbrunnen. We trekked mountain roads, explored quiet meadows, and mapped out several different ceremony options depending on weather and crowds. We had a solid plan…

…and then Switzerland reminded us who’s really in charge. Wedding morning arrived with steady rain, temperatures in the 40s, and clouds hanging low over the mountains. Almost every location we’d planned suddenly was out of reach logistic-wise.

Thankfully, I’d encouraged Morgan ahead of time to pack tights to wear underneath her dress along with hand warmers, and those little preparations ended up making a huge difference. Meanwhile, my husband deserves an award for this elopement. He spent most of the day absolutely soaked, carrying gear, helping us move from location to location, keeping dresses off muddy ground, and somehow still smiling through it all.

Destination elopements are definitely a team effort.

Chasing Mountain Views (and Respecting the Cow Pastures)

One of the most memorable parts of the day was actually the drive from Grindelwald to Lauterbrunnen. We had so much fun pulling over whenever we could, scouting little viewpoints, and trying to find the perfect places for photos along the way. Switzerland is not a place where you can simply wander onto any pretty patch of grass, though! A lot of the beautiful meadows are privately owned, and the grass is carefully protected because it’s important grazing land for the cows. So we had to be respectful and a little creative about where we could stop and explore. It turned the drive into its own little adventure as we searched for beautiful, accessible spots that still gave us beautiful views.

Perfect weather NOT required!

As an elopement photographer, I often have to pivot quickly when weather becomes unpredictable, and I’ve found that the best way to handle it is to simply embrace it!

Some of my favorite images from this day, like the ones one the bridge, happened because of the weather, not despite it. The mist wrapping around the couple gave everything a soft, cinematic feeling that simply can’t be recreated on a sunny day. Morgan and Cutter never once let the weather steal their joy. I remember Morgan talking about the weather a little nervous before the day came, but once we were IN it, she was completely present. They laughed through every change of plans, trusted the process, and focused on what mattered most: marrying each other in SWITZERLAND!

That’s exactly what made this day so unforgettable.

The Ceremony We Never Could Have Planned

I have come to learn that usually the best wedding moments are the ones you never could have planned. The biggest question of the day was where to have the actual vow exchange ceremony. We had scoped and planned the day before but because of the rain, those just weren’t great options.

When booking our stay, I happened upon this cozy little air bnb that happened to have the most sought-out view of the entire valley and town. It was a true hightlight of our trip. We connecte with owners of the Airbnb and they graciously offered us access to a little meadow just beside the property, where the public wasn’t allowed. Nestled above Lauterbrunnen Valley with panoramic views of the cliffs and waterfalls, it felt like something out of a storybook.

So as we headed back to our little apartment to get warm with a cup of coffee, we decided that’s where Morgan and Cutter would exchange their vows. And because of the drizzle that day, there was no audience – no distractions – simply the sound of rain, mountain air, and incredibly heart-felt vows being exchanged.

Planning a Destination Elopement in Switzerland

If you’re dreaming about your own destination elopement in Switzerland, my biggest advice is this:

Come with a plan, but hold it loosely!

We learned that the mountains have a way of writing their own story. Whether you’re exchanging vows in Grindelwald, wandering through the valleys of Lauterbrunnen, or exploring another corner of the Swiss Alps, your wedding day doesn’t need perfect weather, or honestly a perfect schedule, to be extraordinary. It simply needs the two of you.
