There’s a lot of talk about documentary wedding photography these days. If you’re getting married soon, I’m sure you’ve come across the term! And while we are all aware that fads come and go, the intention behind this style is truly timeless.
Attending and photographing wedding after wedding, I’ve realized the beauty in capturing things as they ARE on your wedding day, and not as I curate them to be. I want my presence as the photographer to be as minimal as possible, while still being there for you and your needs. I never want to utter the words “Let’s fake it for the photo.”
As I have adapted this style, my aim is to capture events as they unfold, with very minimal intervention. Leaving room for genuine interactions and emotion allows those who may not be very comfortable performing in front of a camera to be themselves. After all, it’s not just about having pretty pictures of your day, but about re-living the actual moments when you look through your wedding photos later.
Your wedding is not about following directions, staying strictly on schedule, getting the perfect lighting or shot, or performing for the camera. It is about marrying your person. Celebrating with your loved ones. Living in the present. And when you get your gallery back, you’ll be surprised to see things you didn’t even know took place – like Grandma getting down on the dance floor!
There is obviously a time and place for direction, like the formal photo settings. I want you to have the most flattering images, and will absolutely walk you through your couple’s portraits, and some of the shots with your wedding party. But the expectation is never to have your day feel like one long photo shoot.
Weddings are already overwhelming, so I’ll be one less distraction, documenting the day’s magic without drawing too much attention and time that could be spent enjoying the once-in-a-lifetime memories.
In the end, I want you to look back on the images I deliver and re-live the best day of your life. Your story, in real time. Not overly staged, no forced smiles—just the natural, heartfelt moments that embody the true essence of your day.
