How to Find and Book Your Perfect Wedding Photographer
Choosing the right photographer for your wedding day is a really big decision. After all, your photographer isn’t just there to snap pictures—they’re there to tell your story, preserve your memories, and make you feel like the stars of your day. Here’s my guide to help you find and book a photographer who’s the perfect fit for you and your dream wedding.
1. Start With Your Style
Your wedding photos should feel like you. Are you drawn to light and airy shots, or do you prefer bold, dramatic tones? Maybe you love those warm, true-to-life edits (hi, that’s me!). Or you’re loving that vintage, filmy look (also me!). Take time to scroll through Instagram, Pinterest, and wedding blogs. Save photos that speak to you and start noticing patterns in the styles you love. Once you’ve nailed down your aesthetic, look for photographers whose portfolios match that vibe. Their work will shape how you remember your day, so pick someone whose style makes your heart skip a beat!
2. Do Your Research
Once you’ve found a few photographers whose work you adore, it’s time to dive deeper. Check out their websites, read reviews, and pay attention to how they present themselves online. A photographer’s personality can be just as important as their portfolio—you’ll spend a lot of time together on your wedding day, so you want someone who feels like a good match. Look for someone who makes you feel comfortable and whose approach resonates with you. I like to take a bit of a hybrid approach to wedding days – moving between giving guidance, and being a fly on the wall. This assures that you receive images that are both classic and posed, but also capturing moments that feel real, and take you back to your day!
3. Set Your Budget
Photography is an investment, and it’s worth every penny for something as important as your wedding day. That said, it’s important to know your budget going in. Some photographers offer packages that can include everything from engagement sessions to albums and prints. Figure out what’s most important to you and look for packages that align with your priorities. 4. Reach Out and Connect
Now comes the fun part: reaching out! When you contact a photographer, they’ll want to know the date, but also any special elements you’re planning. As creatives, we thrive on these details! This is also your chance to ask questions. What’s their typical turnaround time? Do they offer second shooters? What’s their backup plan if equipment fails? A good photographer will happily answer your questions and make you feel confident in your decision. 5. Book Early!
Photographers often book up months—sometimes even years—in advance, so once you’ve found your perfect match, don’t wait! Booking early not only secures your date but also gives you plenty of time to plan engagement sessions or brainstorm creative ideas together. I have 17 weddings on the books for 2025, and unfortunately that means that many of the most popular wedding dates of the year are spoken for!
